Impact of Policies for Plagiarism in HE across Europe

An ambitious project which aims to survey students, teachers and institutions across Europe on the impact of policies for plagiarism is being undertaken by researchers at Coventry University. The IPPHEAE project which runs until September 2013 will blend research with case studies and spin-off projects. Project partners include institutions from Lithuania, Czech Republic, Poland and Cyprus. Turnitin are also supporting this project. Find out more and how you can get involved.

The conference will take place at the Sage Gateshead, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK 16-18 July 2012 and celebrates ten years of pioneering research in this area.

Call for papers and registration now open

The 5th International Plagiarism Conference will take place at the Sage Gateshead, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK 16-18 July 2012. The 2012 conference celebrates ten years of pioneering research in this area.

The conference themes place the student at the heart of the learning process, and will showcase innovative approaches to addressing plagiarism and authenticity from the global academic community. Papers, workshops, posters, and video submissions are invited on the following themes:

Strategies for engaging students in discussions on plagiarism and authenticity
Enhancing the student experience through e-submission and e-marking
Cultural perspectives on plagiarism, reuse and originality
Addressing falsification, fabrication and plagiarism in published scholarly work
Dealing with authenticity in non text based disciplines and multimedia
Open theme; suggested topics include cryptomnesia, longitudinal perspectives, developments in detection technology, using new technologies to foster authentic learning and assessment

The 2012 conference will take place at the impressive Sage Gateshead live music venue, designed by British architect Norman Forster, without doubt one of the most iconic buildings on the NewcastleGateshead Quayside.

New content

PlagiarismAdvice.org aims to showcase innovative approaches to addressing plagiarism and best practice from members of the academic community. Following a call for content earlier in the year several new articles have been added to the Community best practice section of the website reflecting approaches to promoting original work from students. Resources include details of various interventions to develop student awareness of good academic practice and the value of original work, effectiveness of institutional policies on plagiarism and using Turnitin and treatment of academic misconduct on professional programmes. Additionally video resources demonstrate staff and student experiences of using Turnitin’s GradeMark and PeerMark tools to provide enhanced learning and feedback possibilities.

Plagiarismadvice Online Sessions

Plagiarism Advice training sessions take place on Wednesdays at 1500 GMT and are delivered by WebEx on a range of topics in relation to plagiarism and ensuring the integrity of student work. Our new series of sessions will begin in September and sessions will be as follows:

Getting the message across to students
How and why students plagiarise
Identifying and tackling plagiarism
Designing plagiarism out of coursework
Best practice for dealing with academic misconduct
Institutional policies and procedures

Please note these sessions are for teaching and support staff only.

New plagiarism policy document from the HEA

The Higher Education Academy Integrity Service have produced a new document providing an overview and case studies concerning plagiarism policies for universities, entitled: Policy works Recommendations for reviewing policy to manage unacceptable academic practice in higher education.

It includes information on:

Strategies to inform and educate students
A central ‘academic integrity’ web area .
Strategies for staff engagement and development .
Policy documentation.
Principles and values.
Responsibilities.
Definitions and examples.
Clear and detailed procedures.
Appropriate penalties.
A centralised system for recording cases

There are also some illustrative cases in the document from a wide range of institutions.
